To pay back my student loans. In school 5 years, masters degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. I cannot find a job. School does not tell us a licensure is also required. I just want to help people. More education!

Hello, My name is D. Marie Hines. I attended Capella University for 5 years attempting to get a masters degree in mental health counseling. I worked FT and took 1 class per quarter for 5 years and I finally finished the program in December 2023. What the school does not tell you is that upon graduation, students cannot get a job until you have taken the test to become licensed. The state only allows the test to be taken twice a year. So, I am waiting to take the test to become a license counselor. Meanwhile, I am unemployed with a lot of school debt. The contract job I was working ended as of Dec 2023. I have 4 months before I am eligible to take the test for licensure. I have exhausted all means possible. I am in debt over my head. I had to travel one state over to complete my practicum and internship for clinicals for 9 months. This placed wear and tear on my vehicle which is another issue altogether. I just want to be able to start counseling people who have real issues like anxiety, depression, grief, bipolar I or II, phobias or PTSD. It is what I went to school for from the start. It just does not seem fair that after completing the program, I am stuck. I just want to be a counselor like the school said that I would after graduation.
Thank you so much for your support in this journey. My goal is to be able to do probono (free) therapy sessions for the underserved once I am licensed twice a week. Your help will allow this to be possible. Thanks again.
