I am running, biking, and sometimes trekking hundreds of miles around DC to visit all 759 Capital Bikeshare stations; I've been to over 500 and I've got roughly 200 left. For the final 200, I am seeking your donations to support bike-oriented causes around the DMV: WABA advocates for a safer, bike-able DC, and Free Bikes 4 Kidz does exactly what it sounds like.

Like many cities, Washington D.C. (and neighboring Maryland and Virginia) supports commuters with an affordable shared bike program: Capital Bikeshare. Most Bikeshare subscribers, like the old me, frequent only those few stations nearest to home and work, unaware of to the Capital Bikeshare empire quietly expanding its territory across the DMV. Since its inception in 2008--as the first bikesharing system in North America!!--Capital Bikeshare grown it meager footprint of 120 stations to a whopping 759, covering an area of roughly 500 square miles (don't @ me). And I will bike, run, or crawl to all of them.
...In fact, I've already been to 545 of those stations! And while I managed this feat largely on my own, I now seek your help. As motivation to reach the final 200+ stations before May 1st 2024, and in order to turn this absurd quest into something a little more impactful, I am seeking your money to support two fantastic bike-focused organizations. I have 200 stations left, and whether you can offer 10 cents or 10 dollars per station, those funds will make cycling in DC and its surroundings safer and more accessible.
The Washington Area Bicyclist Association is the leading bicycle advocacy organization in DC, which means that they champion public and legislative advocacy for a safer city for cyclists. While cycling, I have been hit by cars more times than I will ever tell my parents, and a network of protected bike lanes makes a safer, cleaner, and more livable city for wall. WABA's work goes far beyond two wheels, though, and they also lead on initiatives to enhance transportation equity throughout the city.
Conceived by bike lovers in Long Lake, MN, Free Bikes 4 Kidz (FB4K) has since spread to dozens of cities around the country, and half of the money raised will go to FB4K Maryland. The program collects bikes every fall, refurbishes them, and then donates to kids in need and nonprofit organizations. Since FB4K Maryland's founding in 2019, they have refurbished and donated 8735 bikes. Help me support a few more!
