‘NOTHING RUINS A GOOD STORY – LIKE THE OTHERSIDE’
Johnathan J. Morris served our country as a United States Marine for several years (2013 to 2018), rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant. After his deployment to Afghanistan Staff Sgt. Morris experienced Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder symptoms. He received treatment while still serving as a Marine. In 2018 he received an honorable discharge from the USMC.
After military service, Staff Sgt. Morris had difficulty returning to the civilian life. He experienced flashbacks and night tremors from his tour of duty in Afghanistan. He endured depression and suicidal ideations. Sgt. Morris was determined to be fully disabled due to PTSD by the Veteran’s Administration.
In 2019, Sgt. Morris threw himself into his work as a body builder competitor, fitness instructor, and reopened his clothing line. He wanted to keep busy trying to “cure” his mental illnesses. He used social media as his platform to discuss hard topics like his Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. He advocated for similarly situated veterans struggling with mental disorders, resulting from their service in the military.
Unfortunately, during the pandemic of 2020, Sgt. Morris’ mental health plummeted. He withdrew from his family and friends, experiencing PTSD episodes frequently. With little to no contact with the outside world his mental health deteriorated.
Staff Sergeant Morris suffered a debilitating episode after a classmate committed suicide during a live virtual Black History class; severe depression and suicidal ideations returned. At the end of 2021, Sgt. Morris attempted his own suicide.
On February 6, 2023, Sgt. Morris descended into a dark PTSD episode; his mother sought involuntary commitment to Torrence State Hospital for mental health treatment. Prior to securing the court order officers of the McKeesport Police Department attempted to detain Sgt. Morris without lawful authority. This ill-fated attempt ended with the tragic and unnecessary death of a beloved officer.
The officers were not trained to deal with episodic PTSD and rather than employ de-escalation protocols, their tactics [striking him with their cars] triggered Sgt. Morris, escalating until he fired upon the imminent existential threat to his life. When officers returned fire it’s believed, they shot Officer Sluganski. Entire event caught on tape.
Staff Sgt. Morris gave everything he had in service to his country. Officer Sluganski gave his life attempting to save the Sergeant from internal demons. Two men, Brothers serving their country, cut from the same cloth, who took the same basic oath. A tale of unredeemable tragedy.
THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY HAS CONCEALED THESE MIS-STEPS AND IS SEEKING THE DEATH PENALTY FOR ‘SGT. MORRIS’ TO PROVE HE’S ‘TOUGH ON CRIME.’
